What “Off-Track” Means
A garage door rides on rollers in steel tracks (vertical on the sides, then curving to horizontal across the ceiling). “Off-track” means one or more rollers have come out of their channel — the door is no longer guided properly and can twist, drop, or get stuck.
This is the most dangerous garage door failure mode. Forcing the opener can crumple panels, snap cables, and rip hardware out of the wall.
Common Causes
- Vehicle impact — backed into the door or pulled out before it finished opening
- Snapped cable or spring — sudden force imbalance pulls the door out of alignment
- Worn-out roller — old rollers can crumble and let the door slip
- Bent track — usually from impact, sometimes from settling/structural movement
- Loose track mounting brackets — bolts that hold the track to the wall came loose over time
- Damaged hinge — broken hinge changes panel geometry and the roller skips out
What We Do
- Stabilize — secure the door so it can’t fall further
- Diagnose — find the root cause (broken cable? bent track? failed roller?)
- Re-rail — get all rollers back into their tracks
- Replace damaged parts — bent rollers, broken hinges, snapped cables, etc.
- Adjust track alignment — make sure the track is plumb and square
- Balance and test — verify the door operates correctly before we leave

Safety: What NOT to Do
- Do NOT press the opener button to “try again” — it can pull the door further off-track and damage the opener
- Do NOT try to lift or push the door manually if it’s leaning or jammed
- Do NOT stand directly under the door
- Disconnect the opener (pull the red cord, if accessible) so no one accidentally operates it
- Park your car outside until the door is repaired
- Call us — we come 24/7 for off-track emergencies
FAQ
How long does off-track repair take?
Simple cases (just re-rail the rollers): 30–60 minutes. Complex cases (parts replacement, track adjustment): 1.5–3 hours. We quote before starting.
Can I push the door back on the track myself?
Strongly discouraged. The door is heavy, often unbalanced when off-track, and the underlying cause is usually still present. Even if you re-rail it, it will jump again — possibly with worse damage.
Will my door need to be replaced after an off-track event?
Usually no. Most off-track events damage cables, rollers, or hinges — but the panels and tracks are fine. Severe events with panel damage are rarer; we assess and tell you honestly.
Is this an emergency?
If the door is stuck open (security issue) or stuck closed (you can’t get your car out), yes — we prioritize and respond 24/7.
